Kubrick's casting of the twin girls in the shining was based on an eerie photograph of identical twin girls by Diane Arbus. The father of the girls later said, "We thought it was the worst likeness of the twins we'd ever seen." I think that's the most interesting thing about it. Imagine if someone took a photograph of your kids that was to be added to a bigger collection of photographs in a bracket along the lines of "normal people looking freak-like" and it ultimately turned out to look so haunting that it was inspiration for two ghosts in a horror film. Weird as fuck.
